I don’t know what it is about Valentine’s Day that gets me going. At the beginning of January, there are signs everywhere, magazine ads, store displays and of course cards. I think that this is a manufactured holiday, by Hallmark, to sell cards. I’m the biggest sucker. I just love cards and will buy them for any occasion. You can always find me lingering in the card aisle of any establishment that is selling cards.
This year, I purchased my cards in January, at Borders. I was having coffee with a friend. We were on our way out, when we spotted them. We couldn’t pass by. We had to look at all of them and get just the right ones. I actually ending up being late for my next appointment because of it.
Yesterday morning I woke up and decided: this year, I was going to make my own Valentine cards, just like when we were in elementary school. I dropped off my daughter (she works at Legacy Place) and went to Paper Source to get my supplies. I picked out special papers, letter press sayings, a tape roller, metallic markers and bright red envelopes. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I would take some of my best pictures, put them on card stock, write something special and present them to my family. This was going to be easy. It wasn’t. It was much harder than I thought it would be. First, find the appropriate picture. Then compose the correct words to correspond with that picture, which reflects how you feel about that person.
I enjoyed making all of them, and presenting them to my family. I saw the appreciation in their faces, I could feel their love.
After all, isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is all about!
Here’s what I got from my husband, an obligatory box of candy, 3 missing pieces, my kids got first dibs……
